About Me

June 26th, 2008

Hi, and welcome to my blog. How about a nice Prozac martini?

Who the heck am I? Well, my name is Verona. I have a three-year-old son who was a “colicky” baby, a “challenging” toddler, and is presently a “spirited” pre-schooler. This means that I am now certifiably insane. I also have a husband who is one of those people who’s sort of weird but doesn’t realize it and a nine-year-old greyhound who is exceptionally lazy and relishes every minute of it. In his mind, anything less than four large, fluffy pet beds in the house is dog abuse. There are days when our household takes on the subtle undertone of a well-furnished insane asylum. In my free time (ha ha), I enjoy coming up with euphemisms for the word “DIFFICULT” and watching my hair fall out from stress.

I became a mom in December 2004, and calling it an eye-opener would be the understatement of the century. It was more like being smacked in the head with a two-by-four. A screaming, crying, can’t-stand-to-be-in-my-own-skin two-by-four. Needless to say, life was turned upside-down for me, my hubby, and The Laziest Dog On The Planet. Since then we have learned to cope, figured out some parenting strategies, and watched our son become the bright, dynamic, intense, funny (but still challenging) little person that he is. I love him with all my heart –really, more than anyone else in the world –but I often feel as if I’m not up to the job of being his mother.

One thing on which I’ve come to a conclusion is that, as much as I’d like to, I just don’t think I could have another child. Too scared. Too tired. Too old. Mostly too scared. All you moms out there with more than one child, I salute you, admire you, envy you. You make it look easy. Part of my reason for writing this blog is to come to terms with this limitation. I’d like to exorcise some demons. I’d love to hear from other moms.

So, this is my mommy blog….. I have to restrain myself from saying, “but not just a mommy blog,” or “but so much more than a mommy blog,” because that would be an insult to all the wise, witty women who have blazed the mommy blog trail before me. “Mommy blog” seems to carry the same negative connotation as “chick lit” –light, fluffy, inconsequential, meaningless. Yet the lives of moms everywhere and the documentation of those lives are anything but.

Welcome to my mommy blog.

Now have some meds.

P.S. Because I have chosen to maintain my son’s anonymity, and because it just sounds funny (*smirk*), I have decided to refer to my son with a nickname he gained due to his penchant for completely wrecking, with unbridled glee, vast structures of oh-so-carefully assembled wooden train tracks: Babyzilla. I could refer to him by the nickname that I more commonly call him, Swee’pea, but that would just be pukey.

UPDATE AUG 2013: Just read this, peeps.
